Mission

The mission of Jawonio, The Center for People with Disabilities and Special Needs is to advance the independence, well-being and equality of people with disabilities or special needs. Jawonio provides comprehensive medical, clinical, rehabilitative, educational, employment, day habilitation services, service coordination and community living services to children and adults with physical, developmental and/or emotional disabilities.

Our aim is to help consumers reach their optimal levels of funtioning by enhancing their health, education and employment opportunities. The goal of all Jawonio programs is to provide a framework which assures opportunities for individuals with disabilities to live as valuable members of the community.

History

Jawonio was organized in 1947 as the Cerebral Palsy Society of Rockland County, providing outpatient treatment for children with neuromuscular and other similar disabilities. In 1949, the first summer camp program for children with disabilities in Rockland County was founded; two years later, it was expanded to include an overnight program, Camp Jawonio.

Jawonio has continued to expand its programs and now provides high quality services to more than 5,000 children and adults each year. We are currently located in Rockland and Westchester Counties in NY and Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey.

Facts

  • The name Jawonio provides focus for our goal; it comes from a local Native American word meaning Independence.
  • Jawonio Inc. is certified by NYS OMRDD for Day Training, ICF/DD, NYS Department of Health, NYS Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities, NYS Department of Labor and NYS Office of Mental Health.
  • We are an affiliate of the Cerebal Palsy Associations of NYS and a contract agency of Rockland County.
  • We are members of the NYS Rehabilitation Association, the NYS Association of Community Residential Agencies.
  • On the national level, we are a member of ACCSES-DSPA a disability service provider advocacy group.
